The Member of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), Governor of Marib governorate Sultan al-Arada stated that the protection of the Yemeni antiquities is a national duty that requires the combined efforts of official authorities and the community to preserve them.

“The protection of the archeological sites is considered to be a national responsibility”, he said.

He noted that the local authority in Marib governorate is preparing to launch a project to fence off the archaeological sites in the governorate.

His remarks came during his meeting today, Saturday, with the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism in the caretaker government Muammar al-Eryani, our country’s ambassador to UNESCO Dr. Mohammed Jumeih and the President of the American Foundation for Human and Civilization Studies and Special Advisor to the American Council for Overseas Research Centers Dr. Zaydoon Zaid.

Al-Arada highly appreciated the interest of the American Foundation for Human and Civilization Studies in the Yemeni antiquities, which has had long-standing cooperation with Yemen for many decades.

Dr. Jumeih indicated that UNESCO can provide support in the fields of training and qualification, underlining the necessity of carrying out fencing works in accordance with the provisions of the 1972 Convention for the Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Dr. Zaid stated that the American Foundation is willing to work with the Yemeni government and the local authority in Marib to preserve the governorate’s antiquities and support local staff with training and qualification programs.

He mentioned that the Foundation is determined to hold the next session of the Sabaean Conference in Marib governorate.
