Member of the Presidential Leadership Council Dr. Abdullah al-Alimi met Saturday in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The two parties discussed the historic relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them, as well as the latest developments in Yemen and the region.
Al-Alimi briefed Lavrov on the latest political, security, and military developments in Yemen, particularly the recent escalation by the Houthi militias along the western coast and on several fronts, and its humanitarian and civilian infrastructure consequences, as well as its implications for regional security and international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.
He stressed that the state’s responsibility to protect its citizens, territory, and sovereignty and confront armed threats falls within its constitutional responsibilities and legitimate rights under international law.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening state institutions and ensuring that weapons and sovereign decision-making remain under state authority as a foundation for Yemen’s security and stability.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support for the Yemeni government, Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as UN efforts to reach a political settlement to the crisis in Yemen.
He stressed the importance of continued consultation and coordination between the two countries on issues of common interest and of further strengthening bilateral relations.
