Parliament Approves General Mobilization to Counter Houthi Escalation

The House of Representatives held an expanded virtual meeting chaired by Speaker Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani and approved a request by President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to declare general mobilization in response to the Houthi escalation.

The meeting reviewed al-Alimi’s request to protect civilians, defend the republican system and constitutional legitimacy, and safeguard Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The council said the decision was based on Article 37 of the Constitution, which governs general mobilization, as well as other constitutional and legal provisions concerning national defense, emergency measures and civil defense.

Under the decision, general mobilization will be implemented in accordance with the Constitution, the power-transfer declaration and relevant laws, including the General Reserve Law, the law establishing the National Defense Council and the Civil Defense Law. It will take effect upon its announcement and remain in force until the circumstances prompting it cease to exist.

The council called for national unity and coordinated efforts among political forces, while reaffirming support for the Arab Coalition led by Saudi Arabia. It also condemned Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, warning that such attacks threaten regional security and international peace.
