The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today denounced an attack in Yemen’s coastal town of Mocha on 28 January that killed up to seven civilians, including video reporter Ziad Al-Sharabi, and injured 20 others, including journalist, Faisal Al-Thubhani.

“I condemn the killing of Ziad Al-Sharabi,” said the Director-General. “Ziad Al-Sharabi’s death is a blow to the profession and its ability to keep the public informed about the conflict in Yemen. I call on all parties to protect civilians, and journalists, in line with international law and extend my wishes for a full recovery to journalist Faisal Al-Thubhani and all those injured in the attack.”

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions.
