WHO: 166 deaths, 97000 infected cases of cholera in areas run by Houthi militia

In the areas controlled by Houthi militia, cholera has caused 166 deaths and 97000 infected cases with acute watery diarrhea with  since the beginning of 2019, UN agency revealed.

The World Health Organization stated that Ibb province has topped the number of deaths from , with 33 cases, followed by Raima 26 cases, Dhamar 20 cases , then Amran and Sana’a, with 15 and 14 cases respectively.

It said that high mortality rates among women with 86 deaths out of 50395 cases, which represented about 52 % of the total suspected cases of the disease.

The organization pointed out that the elderly people children are the most likely to die of the disease.

Cholera has appeared again in Houthi-run regions because the militia has been stealing and selling medical aid anti-cholera supplies in the black market.

Environmental sanitation experts accuse the Houthi militia of destroying sewage networks in Sana’a, leaving main streets submerged with fetid muck, and creating an environment suitable for the spread of the epidemic.

Medical sources said  the World Health Organizations have provided clinics with the necessary medication to treat the cholera patients, but Houthi rebels have looted the supplies and sold most of them.

UNICEF has been implementing several projects in Sana’a and other Houthi-controlled areas to purify water and distribute chlorine to well owners, water trucks and homes to limit another cholera outbreak.

But a few months ago, Houthi officials stole a huge shipment of chlorine stored at the headquarters of al-Reef Water Corporation in al-Hasbah district and sold it to a trader for about $550.
