Yemen-Japan Discuss Maritime Security Cooperation

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Afrah al-Zouba discussed Monday with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in maritime security, capacity building, and humanitarian and development support.

Al-Zouba briefed Motegi on the recent Houthi escalation in the western coast, Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea, stressing the government’s responsibility to protect its territory and territorial waters and safeguard international navigation.

She called for greater support for the Yemeni Coast Guard and Navy, including training and maritime surveillance, and urged efforts to stop the flow of Iranian weapons and expertise to the Houthis.

Motegi reaffirmed Japan’s strong condemnation of Houthi attacks and its continued support for the Yemeni government, particularly in strengthening the capabilities of the Yemeni Coast Guard and protecting navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
