Shura Council Chairman Discusses with French Ambassador Developments, Houthi Threats to International Shipping

Chairman of Shoura Council Dr. Ahmed Obaid bin Daghr discussed Tuesday with French Ambassador to Yemen Catherine Corm-Kammoun latest developments on the national scene and recent developments along the western coast, in Mokha and around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and their implications for the security and stability of Yemen and the region.
The Chairman of the Shura Council praised France’s supportive position toward Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy, represented by the Presidential Leadership Council, headed by President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi.
He stressed the importance of continued international support for efforts aimed at ending the Houthi coup, restoring state institutions, and preserving Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The two sides discussed the recent escalation by the Houthi terrorist militia in Mokha, along the western coast, and around Bab al-Mandab, as well as the resulting military and security developments that threaten stability in the region.
Dr. Bin Daghr warned that Houthi control over these strategically important areas would give the group greater capacity to threaten international shipping lanes and use Bab al-Mandab as a tool for pressure and blackmail, putting commercial shipping and the security of maritime routes at risk and threatening the flow of global trade.
Dr. Bin Daghr also strongly condemned the Houthi attacks targeting civilian facilities in the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He stressed that targeting civilian objects and facilities constitutes an act of aggression that violates international law and humanitarian values, while threatening the security of the Kingdom and the stability of the region.
Dr. Bin Daghr held the Iran-backed Houthi militia fully responsible for these attacks, stressing that its continued targeting of Saudi Arabia, maritime routes, and civilian facilities exposes the destructive nature of the project being pursued by the group and calls for a firm and deterrent international response to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and safeguard regional security.
For her part, the French Ambassador to Yemen reaffirmed her country’s support for efforts to achieve peace and stability in Yemen.
She stressed the importance of protecting the security of international shipping and freedom of trade in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, and rejecting any threat targeting commercial vessels and international maritime routes. She also reiterated France’s readiness to continue supporting international efforts aimed at ending the Yemeni crisis and reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution.
