National Demining Program (NDP) Director Brig. Ameen Al-Aqeli said ever since Houthi militia’s coup, Yemen has suffered the largest use of landmines widely and randomly planted by Houthi militiamen in every region they controlled.
Al-Aqeli’s remarks came as he contributed to the periodic sessions of the signatories of Anti- Personnel Mine Ban Convention held in Geneva.
“More than 14 thousand anti-personnel mines and 62 thousand anti-vehicles tanks, planted by Iran-allied Houthi militia, have been pulled out from different parts of Yemen,” Brig. Al-Aqeli said.
He added that there are still large number of different size and shapes of landmines planted randomly in wide swaths of Yemeni territories.
“Landmines pose serious challenge for Yemen for decades to come, they prevent many internally displaced persons from returning to their own regions, will continue to kill innocent people on daily basis” Al-Aqeli added.
